Dear Elementary Parents,

Welcome back! It is hard to believe that we are already through the Thanksgiving break. My wife and I were able to spend some time with each of our familys and partake in some of the traditions we have grown up enjoying. I hope that you were able to share some special time with family and friends. As the students showed up this morning at the Matmor campus, it appeared that some of them were still in a turkey-induced food coma, so apparently many of us ate very well. Although it is always difficult to head back to work after a long break, it is important that we all hit the ground running this week. There are only three weeks left in the second quarter and we all want to finish strong.

While we were only in school for two days last week, they were full of great happenings. The kindergarten class kicked the week off with a bang during their Thanksgiving Day Chapel. It was incredible to see our little ones reciting Scripture, singing fun songs from memory, and expertly delivering speeches. Thank you to all of the parents who supported the children and a big thanks to Mrs. Crouch and Mrs. Geist for putting everything together. The campus was flooded with goodies on Tuesday, as parents from all grades delivered food for class celebrations. Our morning chapel set the tone of thanks for the day as a student from each class read a composition about what they were thankful for. It was a great day and another example of the family atmosphere found at WCS.

This week will be back to business as usual. Please remember that Wednesday is early release and remind your child to sign up for the activity they wish to participate in. For our fifth grade students, Wednesday will be the first day of band classes. Make sure you have turned in your registration to the office. Also, we had sent out information about the school float for the Woodland Christmas parade on December 12th. We need parents to help work on the float. Only a few families have signed up so far to be on the float. We will need a few more families by this Wednesday if we are going to be able to pull off the float. Please contact Michele Fitzer at mfitzer@woodlandchristian.org or call the office if you are interested. Work on the float will begin next week and take place after school.

A few reminders before closing:

  1. Tomorrow night, December 1st, is the Boys Varsity first home basketball game of the season. Come out to the Nest and support the WCHS Boys Basketball team at 6:00 p.m. The JV and Varsity Girls basketball teams play away at Winters 5:30 & 7:00 p.m.
  2. December 9th in the LPC Worship Center on the West St. campus the Preschool will be performing their Christmas Program at 9:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
  3. December 12th will be the Woodland Christmas Parade. The parade starts at 10:00 a.m.
    We need your help:
    1. Parents and friends to help work on the float, work begins next week after school.
    2. We are looking for childrens ethnic costumes to complete our theme. If your child would like to participate and has a costume, we have room for about 20 kids. Participation is first come, first served.
    3. Adults are needed to ride on the float with the children and also walk along side.

My wife and I were able to watch The Blindside last Friday. During the heartwarming account of a family opening their home to a young man in need, I was reminded of how much we have to give. In just over three months of school this year, I have seen how clearly our school community understands this idea. Together, WCS has given over 3,000 lbs. of food to the Yolo Food Bank, put together 155 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and baked 1,900 cookies for our local emergency responders. We are currently wrapping up the coat drive put together by our sophomores and have many more events on the horizon that will bless the community of Woodland. This, of course, only takes into account activities done through the school. I know that many of you serve the community on your own. What a great place to be a part of. Have a wonderful week and enjoy your leftover turkey sandwiches.

Thank You,

Justin Smith
