Dear Middle School Parents,

Welcome back! It is hard to believe that we are already through the Thanksgiving break. My wife and I were able to spend some time with each of our familys and partake in some of the traditions we have grown up enjoying. I hope that you were able to share some special time with family and friends. As the students showed up this morning at the Matmor campus, it appeared that some of them were still in a turkey-induced food coma, so apparently many of us ate very well. Although it is always difficult to head back to work after a long break, it is important that we all hit the ground running this week. There are only three weeks left in the second quarter and we all want to finish strong.

What a joy it was last Tuesday to have the opportunity to share a meal together as a Middle School. Jane Spurlock, with the help of many parents, was able to put together a traditional Thanksgiving Day spread for all of our students and staff. Tables were set, sparkling cider was served, and each student filled up on the delicious food. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the great time together.

This morning marked the first band lesson for the 2009-2010 school year at WCS. Our beginning band students showed up eager to learn and music was made. We had an excellent teacher-to-student ratio this morning. It is not too late to sign up for either the beginning or advanced band classes. Registration forms can be obtained through the office. We appreciate your continued prayer as the program grows.

Student council evaluations are just about completed. Winners will be announced at this Thursdays chapel. If you are a parent of a nominee, please encourage your child to have a positive attitude whether they are elected or not. It is important for us to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. There will be opportunities for those not elected to participate in committees and event planning done by the student council.

We had previously sent out information about the school float for the Woodland Christmas parade on December 12th. Only a few families have signed up so far. We will need a few more families by this Wednesday if we are going to be able to pull off the float. Please contact Michele Fitzer at mfitzer@woodlandchristian.org or call the office if you are interested. Work on the float will begin next week and take place after school.

A few reminders before closing:

  1. Tomorrow night, December 1st, is the Boys Varsity first home basketball game of the season. Come out to the Nest and support the WCHS Boys Basketball team at 6:00 p.m. The JV and Varsity Girls basketball teams play away at Winters 5:30 & 7:00 p.m.
  2. December 9th in the LPC Worship Center on the West St. campus the Preschool will be performing their Christmas Program at 9:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
  3. December 12th will be the Woodland Christmas Parade at 10:00 a.m.

My wife and I were able to watch The Blindside last Friday. During the heartwarming account of a family opening their home to a young man in need, I was reminded of how much we have to give. In just over three months of school this year, I have seen how clearly our school community understands this idea. Together, WCS has given over 3,000 lbs. of food to the Yolo Food Bank, put together 155 shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and baked 1,900 cookies for our local emergency responders. We are currently wrapping up the coat drive put together by our sophomores and have many more events on the horizon that will bless the community of Woodland. This, of course, only takes into account activities done through the school. I know that many of you serve the community on your own. What a great place to be a part of. Have a wonderful week and enjoy your leftover turkey sandwiches.

Thank You,

Justin Smith
