Curriculum

BIBLE (ACSI)

God’s Way to Live provides a two to three week study of Bible heroes with a focus on character traits and how they apply to students’ lives.  Second graders memorize selected Bible verses.  Each Friday students attend a school chapel service.

MATHEMATICS (Saxon)

Second graders are introduced to math concepts ranging from concrete to abstract.  Students learn addition and subtraction (up to three digit numbers), money, geometry, fractions, measurement, time, data and graphing. Multiplication and division are introduced.

READING (Open Court)

Teaching phonics through the Open Court program is continued in second grade to help each student become a stronger decoding reader and more accurate speller. Slide Down the Sky and Sea to Shining Sea introduce students to a variety of authors and genres.  Activities with each story include practice with comprehension and vocabulary.  Parent involvement is encouraged to help their student become a more fluent and expressive reader.  Victory Drill is also used to increase fluency.  Independent reading in a book of the student’s choice and a monthly book report are required.

LANGUAGE (Write Source)

The Write Away Handbook and Sourcebook, Daily Language Review, and other selected activities are used to teach nouns, verbs, adjectives, sentence structure, and punctuation.

COMPOSITION/WRITING (Write Reflections)

Write Reflections is used to teach expository writing.  Second graders learn to identify a topic sentence and write two or more supporting (detail) sentences for each of two main ideas.  Poetry and narrative writing opportunities are also given throughout the year.

SPELLING

Weekly spelling word lists are given to reinforce the phonics spelling patterns being studied.  A variety of activities are used to practice the list words. Each list is tested weekly.  In addition, spelling words are included in dictated sentences.

HANDWRITING (Zaner-Bloser)

Neatness and correct letter formation using the Zaner-Bloser manuscript form are reinforced and encouraged.

SCIENCE (ACSI)

Purposeful Design Level Two is used to help students investigate, observe, and think about the world around them.  Lessons are designed to weave together the wonders of the created world and a Biblical worldview.  Units include Life Science, Physical Science, the Human Body, and Earth Science. Weekly practice is given in using the scientific method involving simple experiments.

SOCIAL STUDIES (A Beka)

Second graders step back into history and learn what life would have been like in our country’s early days.  They learn the history of patriotic songs, our flag, and holidays. The lives of groups and individuals that have made valuable contributions to our American heritage are studied, also.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

During daily PE time emphasis is placed on cooperation as a team and showing good sportsmanship.

ART

A variety of art projects are completed throughout the year based subject seasonal themes.

MUSIC

Students participate in singing at a weekly chapel.  All students participate in a musical program prepared and presented to the parents at Open House.

ENRICHMENT

Second grade students are involved in Spanish, library, cooking, hands-on weekly stations, weekly chapel, Open House program, Grandparents’ Day program and special day celebrations
Students go off campus to the UCD Insect Museum, live action plays, Silveyville Christmas Tree Farm, and Bishop’s Hamburger Farm
