Athletic Director Newsletter

Woodland Christian School - April 2008

Parents,

Spring seasons are in full swing and as league play intensifies, our teams are competing at a very high level.  The Softball team remains undefeated in CVCL competition as they look to have their third straight league title well in hand.  If their high level of success on the field wasn’t enough, they will even be performing vocally at tonight’s Sacramento River Cats game during the 7th inning stretch.  Please come out and support our ladies as they only have two home games remaining this season.
The Golf team is also doing extremely well thus far.  They took an undefeated record into the second to last week of the season before finally losing a match to rival Forest Lake in difficult, rainy conditions.  Sunny Cheema and Chelsa Helget continue to lead a formidable team that with only one league loss has the inside track on a CVCL championship.  Coaches Jim Chandon and Les Toland continue to provide encouragement, instruction and spiritual guidance to our golfers.  It is truly a blessing to have them helping out.
Girls Soccer enjoyed an undefeated week last week as they played to a 3-3 tie with Waldorf and then defeated Foresthill for the second time this season.  Shannon Lynch has played solidly in the midfield all year and was able to score her first goal of the season against Foresthill.  Coach Kelly Stephens has stepped in for the injured Coach Sorbello and done a great job.
Our Middle School soccer team has begun league play and although they have lost their first two matches, enthusiasm runs high.  Coaches Dave Hargadon, Reuben Arias and Eddie Tapia are working the boys and girls hard and helping them improve daily.  Tessa Tapia leads on the field as the only 8th grader on a very young and promising team.
Unfortunately we weren’t able to continue to field our Baseball team this year.  Due to academic issues, many of the few players we had were forced to focus on their schoolwork.  I strongly anticipate fielding a team for the 2009 season.  Coach Greg Gonzalez did a great job working with the boys.
On another high note, both Roy Kilpatrick and Stephanie Toland have received athletic scholarship offers from Bethany Bible College in the Santa Cruz area.  They have been offered Basketball scholarships for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year.  Congratulations are in order for them.  Along with Mica Romero, who received a softball scholarship to Willamette University in Oregon, which makes three Cardinals who plan to participate in collegiate athletics next year.
Hopefully you can make it out to support our Cardinals as the seasons wind down to a close.  Please thank all coaches when you have the opportunity.  They make a truly great sacrifice to be a part of the lives of our young people and do a phenomenal job.  Thanks for all of your help and feel free to contact me at jsmith@fbcwoodland.org with any athletic related questions, comments or concerns.  GO CARDINALS!

God Bless,
