Curriculum

BIBLE- (ACSI)

Christ and His Church is a study of the life of Christ (his actions, teachings and miracles), the early Church in Acts, and missions from Paul until present day. Students memorize a Bible verse each week. We combine information with daily application of character traits.  Each Friday students attend a school chapel service.

MATHEMATICS (Houghton Mifflin)

Math introduces third graders to math concepts ranging from concrete to abstract. Students learn multiplication and division facts, geometry, algebra, graphing, data, fractions, as well as other numerical operations.

READING (Open Court)

Time for Dreams and Across the World introduce students to a variety of authors and genres. They contain folk tales and legends from around the world, Bible stories, the fables of Aesop, and some of the very best contemporary literature. There are various activities with each story, which also involve comprehension and vocabulary. Sarah, Plain and Tall  is read as a class to develop higher thinking skills. Students also participate in literature circles, reading a trade book as a small group during the year.  Independent reading in a book of the student’s choice and a book report are required monthly.

LANGUAGE (Daily Language Review, Write on Track, Paragraph Editing)

Correct sentence structure, use of punctuation marks, and word usage is practiced. Nouns, verbs, pronouns, and adjectives are reviewed. Adverbs are introduced.  Creative writing and dictionary skills are worked on throughout the year.

COMPOSITION / WRITING (Write Reflections)

Write Reflections is used to teach expository writing. Third graders learn to write a five-paragraph composition. Poetry and narrative writing opportunities are also given throughout the year.

SPELLING (ACSI)

Through a variety of interesting exercises the ACSI spelling book integrates spelling into the language arts process. Lessons are designed to incorporate vocabulary development, grammar, dictionary skills, and creative writing. Weekly spelling tests are given.

HANDWRITING (Zaner Bloser)

Correct manuscript writing is reviewed and instruction in the correct letter formation of cursive writing is begun in 3rd grade.

SCIENCE ( ACSI )

A Purposeful Design employs an activity-based, hands-on approach to instruction about ecosystems and plants, matter, motion and force, electricity, magnets,  the human body,  rocks and soils, earth’s surface, the solar system, stars and constellations. Every chapter in this series weaves together the wonders of the created world and a biblical worldview.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Californian Indians and the impact they had on our area are studied through field trips and reading material. Government and community are also part of our curriculum. A whole town is created in the classroom and functions as a real city. Each student learns how to run his or her own business. They learn how to be producers and consumers.  Geography is studied in conjunction with our “trip around the world” that is part of literature program.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

During a daily ½ hour PE time emphasis is placed on cooperation as a team and showing good sportsmanship.

ART

Throughout the year a variety of art projects are completed based on classroom themes and seasonal events.

MUSIC

Students participate in singing at a weekly chapel. All students participate in a musical program prepared and presented to the parents at Open House.

ENRICHMENT

Third grade students are involved in Spanish, library, gardening, weekly chapels, Open House program, Grandparents’ Day program, and special day celebrations.  Field trips have included trips to the Yolo Basin Wetlands (twice a year), UCD Insect Museum, live action plays, visits to farmers’ fields, walking tour to view neighborhood plants, and downtown city tour.
