I am an Entrepreneur
“I have been attending Woodland Christian since I was in preschool, which feels like my whole life! I have been able to grow up with all of my friends, which is really special to me. The teachers are also really special, as they are very personally involved with their students’ lives. I know that I can go to any one of my teachers for advice, and they also teach me about God. What I love most about Woodland Christian is the close-knit community it fosters, the carding teachers, and the incredible experiences I've had with our FFA Chapter.
I embarked on my FFA journey as a freshman at Woodland Christian, but my connection to agriculture started much earlier—at the age of 10 through 4-H. Since then, I’ve been raising hogs, now along with goats, for the Yolo County Fair and the spring show. Woodland Christian High School’s FFA Chapter has taught me so much. I have become a leader as the vice president of our chapter, I have my own floral business, and I am much more outgoing than I used to be.
As the vice president of FFA, I get to oversee all of our FFA committees and ensure everything runs smoothly. I plan events and chapter meetings, and I also get to oversee the annual Barn Dance, one of our many fun events. I love being involved at Woodland Christian, which is one of the many reasons I wanted to become the vice president of FFA. I also knew that the officer teams in FFA get to connect to other schools’ chapters, which I saw as a unique opportunity to grow my social circle and grow my leadership skills. One of my favorite parts about our FFA community is our teacher, Mrs. Gumm. She always provides us with the best opportunities. We may be a smaller chapter, but she does not treat us like we are small. She pushes us to do things out of our comfort zone, to be better, and to reach out to our agricultural community that surrounds us.
My experience in FFA has also given me the skills I need to start my own business. I began in February 2024 with a tulip sale, and everything just took off from there. I thought this would be a great opportunity to make some money and pursue something I am passionate about. I buy the flowers from a flower shop in Sacramento, prepare them, skillfully arrange them, and make deliveries. I make and sell bouquets for dances, I have done a wedding, and I would like to continue expanding my business because I love it! I even have my own Instagram page for my business. Mrs. Gumm has been really great through this whole process, as she has provided me with materials I need if I cannot get them myself, she has helped me price things, and she is a huge supporter of what I am doing. I am very grateful for all of her help and support!
I have learned so much through being the vice president of our FFA and having my own business. First, you need to be flexible with your schedule. Orders will come in and you need to learn how to rearrange your schedule to accommodate your business. You also need to be willing to put yourself out there and connect with others, even if you don’t know them, so you can expand your business. Lastly, you need to be open to other peoples’ ideas, and have a willingness to learn.
After graduation, I plan to go to Cal Poly SLO, to pursue a degree in psychology to become a forensic psychologist. I am very passionate about helping people. While I am at Cal Poly, I hope to continue to pursue my floral business and take more AG classes.
I would 100% recommend Woodland Christian’s FFA to any incoming high school student. It has provided me with so many incredible opportunities and helped develop skills and passions that I will use for the rest of my life! I am outgoing, personable, and a successful leader. ” Kylie Weaver, Class of 2025
